DSSC Materials
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), also known as Grätzel cells, represent a cost-effective third-generation photovoltaic technology. Unlike conventional silicon-based systems, DSSC materials rely on organic or metal-complex sensitizers adsorbed onto nanoporous TiO₂ electrodes to harvest sunlight and generate electricity. This architecture enables simple fabrication, low material costs, and effective performance even under diffuse or indoor lighting conditions.
Key Components
A typical DSSC consists of four essential components:
- Photoanode – nanoporous TiO₂ layer on transparent conductive oxide (TCO) glass, providing high surface area for dye adsorption
- Sensitizer (dye) – light-absorbing molecule that injects electrons into TiO₂; ruthenium complexes (N3, N719, N749 black dye) remain benchmark standards
- Electrolyte – redox mediator (typically iodide/triiodide or cobalt-based) that regenerates the oxidized dye
- Counter electrode – catalytic layer (usually platinum) that reduces the electrolyte
Solid-state DSSCs replace the liquid electrolyte with organic hole transport materials such as Spiro-OMeTAD , improving long-term stability and enabling flexible device architectures.
